David and Ralph Smith...brothers from Wrightstown, PA...traveled the Great Wagon Road down to Newberry/Spartanburg County, SC with the group of Quakers. David is known for being kicked out of the Quaker community twice...once for fighting in the Revolutionary War (against Quaker law) and another time for marrying his wife in a Presbyterian Church.
"The Old Quaker Cemetary [sic]
This is the Old Quaker Cemetary [sic], marking the site of the land conveyed by David Smith in October, 1778, to Armel Fincher, John Clark, Ralph Hunt, John Nederman, trustees appointed by the people called Quakers, members of the Meeting on Padgett’s Creek, whereon a church was built. Some years later the Quakers moved from this vicinity and on May, 1822, the same tract was surveyed for Nathaniel Gist, after which it was acquired by M.E. Church Congregation. The Quaker Methodist Church building was moved to another location several years later." - Erected by The Union County Historical Foundation C.B. McGrady, 1961
